The iPhone 12 can bring a range of new features
The iPhone 12 will land later this year, which could be a
major change for Apple's flagship smartphone. The iPhone 11 series brought very
little in terms of upgrades to 2018 devices, so 2020 seems like the perfect
opportunity for a big shakeup.
Why change things with Apple iPhone 12? The iPhone 11 series
focuses on camera tweaks and gives a little more power to the interior, but
they are the best updates.
So what does the next iPhone - the first truly flagship
Apple device of the new decade - bring? We have already seen Apple unveil this
year's 'Budget iPhone' in the form of the iPhone SE, but we can be sure that
the company will be launching a new flagship series later this year.
The good news is that we’ve already heard a lot of rumors
about the iPhone 12. These include the 5G iPhone model, new cameras, new design, and
more.
We've included all the latest leaks and updates on the new
iPhone in the article below and we've included some ideas on what to expect.
All of this has been based on a decade of monitoring the the rumor mill around the latest iPhone, so we've tried to give you a complete
picture of what to expect from your next Apple handset.
iPhone 12 Release Date and Price
There is no official iPhone 12 release date yet, but come on
- we know when it will be. Apple launches its new phones almost metronomically,
and despite the rumor that it will change every year, this is always the case.
First, the new iPhone release date is probably September
2020 - and it will always be the second week. So let's see if Apple launches
the iPhone 12 on September 8 (or if you want to hit a later sale date of 15
September).
You will be able to pick it up after 10 days, so if you are
desperate to get your hands on it you need to work on a Friday. The novel
coronavirus outbreak is likely to impact the next iPhone product.
We hear that the development is unaffected, and there are
now reports that the major manufacturing plants are fully staffed. Plus, an
executive at Foxconn (the main manufacturer of the iPhone) said the company
aims to meet the lost ground.
However, there are reports that the phone will be delayed
until October or November, and Apple has not finalized the design yet (by the
end of March 2020). Some sources say it will slip into 2021. Reuters also spoke
of the possibility of delays.
The respected analyst suggests that the iPhone
12 release date may be left unstable by the model, with the smaller devices
coming soon after launch, and the larger ones perhaps a month later. So the
answer to 'be late' is yes and no.
As of April 2020, the latest news on the issue comes from a a report in The Wall Street Journal, which states that the iPhone 12 production
was delayed by a month due to the coronavirus effect.
This does not mean that the release date of the series is also
delayed, but we think it is likely that this report is accurate.
When it comes to iPhone 12 pricing, it is wide enough to
accommodate current models. For reference, the iPhone 11 starts at $ 699 / £
729 / AU $ 1,199, the iPhone 11 Pro starts at $ 999 / £ 1,049 / AU $ 1,749, and
the iPhone 11 Pro Max starts at $ 1,099 / £ 1,149 / AU $ 1,899.
It has also been backed up by rumors that the iPhone 12 Pro
will launch at 999 (hence £ 1,049 / AU $ 1,749), while the iPhone 12 Pro Max
will start at $ 1,099 (likely £ 1,149 / AU $ 1,899).
However, at the bottom of the range, things are a bit
different, with the most direct iPhone 11 successor (6.1-inch iPhone 12)
apparently starting at 49 749 - so 50 more than the iPhone 11. But even then a
5.4-inch iPhone 12 model starts at $ 649 - so it's less than the iPhone 11.
Having said all this, a report suggests that the price of
materials for the iPhone 12 range could go up, indicating even higher prices at
retail.
iPhone 12 Name
First things first: We are very confident that 2020
Apple phones will be called the iPhone 12 Series, no thanks to the 11S or
industry analyst (with a great track record).
That's why we call it the iPhone 12 even though Apple has
not confirmed the name. Others call it the iPhone 2020 or the 'new iPhone' -
but we don't think Apple will be the moniker for it.
iPhone 12 Design
The iPhone 12 has an angular design like the iPhone 5,
according to a massive design leak, and if true, this new look can be heavily
broken. On the one hand, it looks like the iPad Pro models, so professional and
elegant, but it is very uncomfortable.
One of the upcoming phones may lack analysts' opinions, with
the front-facing camera likely to be embedded under the screen. If this
happens, we consider it to be the most expensive iPhone 12 model to have this
feature - perhaps the iPhone 12 Pro Max, or it was launched.
The first design leak indicates that the phone has a line and a smaller one than before.
Another leak suggests that Apple is developing a new Face ID
tech, which will lead to a re-design and a thinner line. The company is accused
of trying several combinations, including minimizing front-facing optics, which
fit the top bezel.
Of course, the leak from the Zone Processor (named Leaker)
refers to four iPhone 12 models, all of which have short notes. Additionally,
the smallest of these models have a 5.4-inch screen, and the 6.1-inch model has
an aluminum body, while another 6.1-inch model and 6.7-inch one (iPhone 12 Pro
and Pro Max) uses stainless steel.
One report suggested that Face ID was completely eliminated
in favor of an underscore fingerprint scanner, but this is unlikely.
Kuo also claims that the metal frame is similar to the
iPhone 4's frame, suggesting that it is not as skewed as the current models. He
said the overall design was "substantial" in contrast to current
iPhone models.
In fact, Bloomberg-based sources say the iPhone 12 Pro and
iPhone 12 Pro Max has flat stainless steel edges, more sharp rounded corners,
and flat screens, although the iPad Pro is similar in design. They also
represent short notes on four rumor models.
Another leak indicates that the models are actually the
same, except for some differences in camera layout and measurements. Based on
this leak, the 5.4-inch iPhone is 131mm longer, the 6.1-inch is 147mm longer
and the 6.7-inch model is slightly longer than the 158mm iPhone 11 Pro Max.
However, it is thin, apparently coming in at 7.4mm thick,
while the iPhone 11 Pro Max is 8.1mm thick.
However, the above leak from the Kuo confirmed many rumored
trends, including the iPhone 12 Pro versions adding a time-of-flight sensor,
adding a budget flagship telephoto lens, and series-wide support to 5G and
finally USB-C.
It may not be the only on-screen camera, as Apple is rumored
to be equipping its next phones with a fingerprint scanner.
This is a big change for the brand as current models do not
have a fingerprint scanner. The camera may not have all the Face ID sensors on
the screen, so this fingerprint scanner replaces the Face ID, but we're not
sure Apple will go that far.
When it comes to colors, we hear the rumor that the iPhone
12 will leave its predecessor, the forest green, for Navy Blue - a svelte color
to match clothing colors, to be sure. Like the split between the 'fun' pastel
colors of the standard iPhone 11 and the classic colors of the iPhone 11 Pro
and Pro Max, we may not see the blue coming to the cheaper model.
iPhone 12 Display
One or more 2020 iPhone models may have a 120Hz refresh
rate, from 60Hz on current models. It - rumored to be by a named leaker - makes
the interactions seem smooth. This is a claim we've heard more than once, and
some phones already have refresh rates over 60Hz, just like some iPads, so it's
not incredible.
Screen sizes may also vary, with respected Apple analyst
Ming-Chi Kuo says that the iPhone 12 Pro Max will have a 6.7-inch screen (up
from 6.5 inches on the iPhone 11 Pro Max) and the iPhone 12 Pro. 5.45-inch
screen (down from 5.8-inch on iPhone 11 Pro).
He said the standard iPhone 12 will clearly be at 6.1
inches, but will be upgraded from LCD to OLED. This is a claim we've heard more
than once, and that means all three 2020 iPhones have an OLED screen.
Another source widely agreed but said the iPhone 12 Pro is
expecting a 5.4-inch screen. They say the two Pro models use the OLED version,
which is thinner and cheaper than the screens used in the iPhone 11 Pro range.
This may mean lower prices, but we don't count it.
We have heard of a similar size option elsewhere, but Apple
may be releasing four new models in September. According to one analyst, Apple
releases a 6.7-inch phone, a 5.4-inch one, and two 6.1-inch phones.
They will not go into more detail but this claim is accurate
but indicates that the 6.1-inch size will have a top-end and slightly lower-end
model.
And that might be fine because we've heard it again, this
time from the famous Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, these four models have OLED
screens and 5G, but one of the 6.1-inch models and the 5.4-inch one have two
rear cameras, while the other two models There are three.
The Zone processor (another leaker) agrees with everything
(unlike the OLED bit, which is not mentioned one way or the other), but the two
top-end models have three camera lenses along with a lidar scanner.
We have also heard that at least some iPhone 12 models have
thinner, cheaper and more energy-efficient screens than the iPhone 11 series. This
allows the phones to be thinner, as well as long between fares.
iPhone 12 specs
Another big change comes in the form of 5G, which is widely
rumored to be for the iPhone 12, and Kuo said he hopes the three models will
support 5G. As multiple sources suggest and many other phones already support
5G, we fully expect at least one of them.
It supports both the custom-made 5G antenna, the 5nm A14 the bionic processor inside the iPhone 12 - what this means for the average user,
and the iPhone with even greater battery life and more power than ever before.
This is great because the iPhone battery life is currently the best we’ve seen
from Apple.
While the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have 6GB of
stuff, the RAM can also get an osteo from their predecessor - 4GB - although
the standard iPhone 12 clearly sticks with 4GB. This is something we are
hearing again and again, so it may be true.
The chipset also seems to be ready to go low because of the
benchmark of the A14 Bionic leak has shown to be single-core and multi-score,
ahead of the Snapdragon 865, the processor you'll find in almost all Android
flagships by 2020.
And the iPhone 12 can also support the new 802.11ay
specification, which allows for sharing content at speeds of at least
20-30Gbps. So in every sense, this phone is likely to be fast.
iPhone 12 camera
The iPhone 12 camera can also be upgraded, there are rumors
to include a laser-powered 3D camera. This is on the backside, and while one
rumor only mentions lasers, the other one talks about depth-sensing snapper,
and one mentions 3D sensing, so this may be something we see in some form.
We have also seen a leaked sketch showing the four rear
lenses on the iPhone 12 Pro. This sketch comes from the architecture of iOS 14
and is backed up by many sources.
All three lenses look like the ones on the iPhone 11 Pro,
perhaps a little bigger, but the new fourth lens looks like the Lidar scanner
found in the iPad Pro 2020. It can accurately determine distances and therefore
depth, so it is compatible with the above rumors and allows for augmented
reality and portrait mode.
We specifically heard about the inclusion of the Lidar The scanner in the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max (along with the three
lenses), but the basic iPhone 12 is said to have two camera lenses and no Lidar
scanner. These claims are made by multiple sources.
Elsewhere, the iPhone 12 may have a 64MP main camera, more
than a 12MP snapper in some previous versions, which is a huge upgrade. This
leak suggests that the phone has multiple lenses that support night mode
shooting, and the ultra-wide snapper has a special macro mode.
Another report from Fast Company cited sources close to the
phone's product and said similar features are under development. One of the
sources of the rumor is that the two top models will get it along with the
triple-lens camera, while the two lower-end will get a dual-lens camera without
3D sensing.
Elsewhere, we hear that the top-end iPhone 12 (iPhone 12 Pro
Max) is getting a new image stabilization tech called 'sensor-shift', which
allows the sensor to move to deal with the camera shake.
Recent EU ruling that future iPhones will not be able to use
lightning cables in Europe. Apple may be forced to change the connector of
future phones to USB-C, and it is still unclear whether this will be the case
for the iPhone 12.
Another report from Chinese publication Kaifa News suggests
that Apple and other manufacturers may soon use GaN power adapters. These are
currently used by Shiomi and allow for fast charging up to 65 watts.
There is no guarantee that it will enter the iPhone 12 or
the iPhone in the future - but that does mean we will see a faster and faster
charging experience.
In fact, the iPhone 12 uses new software, such as iOS 14,
and although we don't know much about it, a leak suggests that it might have a
new, iPad's-inspired app conversion screen.
