Redmi Note 10S Review: Barely an Upgrade

The Redmi Note 10S is a slightly more powerful version of the Redmi Note 10 that launched in March this year. The Redmi Note 10 is still a capable smartphone and got good marks in our review. Xiaomi claims to have improved the Redmi Note 10 by using a different processor, more RAM and a higher resolution main camera sensor, all for a small jump in price. Is it worth paying for the Redmi Note 10S or spending that money elsewhere? I checked the Redmi Note 10S in our tests to find out.

Redmi Note 10S price in India

IN Redmi Note 10S takes precedence over Redmi Note 10 (Consideration) and is available in two versions. The base variant offers 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, priced at Rs. 14,999. The higher variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage costs Rs. 15 999.

Redmi Note 10S design

Redmi Note 10S and Redmi Note 10 look the same, making it impossible to differentiate them unless you get a newer model in its exclusive Deep Sea Blue color. This new variant has a gradient finish that looks fresh. Like the Redmi Note 10, the Note 10S is also available in delicate colors like Shadow Black and Frost White.

Redmi Note 10S is a relatively thin smartphone measuring 8.29 mm and weighing 179 g. The polycarbonate back is curved at the sides, so it is comfortable to hold. The camera module is on the back left and does not protrude much. To catch the eye, the new 64MP main camera has a silver backlight.

Redmi Note 10S in the new Deep Sea Blue color looks fresh

On the front, the Redmi Note 10S is equipped with a 6.43-inch AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. You will see a large camera hole at the top. The display has thin bezels on the sides and the chin is noticeably thicker. The frame of Redmi Note 10S is made of plastic. It is curved at the sides and relatively flat at the top and bottom.

The power button has a built-in capacitive fingerprint scanner and is well positioned on the right side of the phone along with the volume buttons. The Redmi Note 10S has stereo speakers with speakers at the top and bottom. The IR emitter commonly found on Redmi smartphones is at the top along with a secondary microphone. The USB Type-C port and 3.5mm headphone jack are on the bottom.

The Redmi Note 10S offers IP53 dust and water resistance, which is not very common in this price range. You will also see a rubber flange around the SIM card tray to prevent water from entering the device. The battery capacity has not changed compared to the Redmi Note 10 – 5000 mAh. It comes with a 33W charger, which is a nice addition considering the price of this smartphone.

Redmi Note 10S: specifications and software

The Redmi Note 10S is equipped with a more powerful MediaTek Helio G95 processor than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 678 in the Redmi Note 10. This processor is paired with 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM, and you can choose between 64GB and 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage. There is also a dedicated slot for expanding memory.

The Redmi Note 10S features an AMOLED display with Full HD + resolution and a maximum brightness of 1100 nits. It has good viewing angles and is easy to read in sunlight. You can also customize the color scheme and color temperature of the display to suit your needs. Redmi Note 10S supports Bluetooth 5, dual band Wi-Fi, VoLTE and VoWiFi. It is a dual SIM device and can use two nano SIM cards.

Xiaomi brings the latest MIUI 12.5 to Redmi Note 10S

Xiaomi ships the Redmi Note 10S with MIUI 12.5, making it the first smartphone with the latest MIUI. The user interface runs on top Android 11 and my device had the April Android Security Patch. The Redmi Note 10S was running an interim MIUI 12.5 during the review period and more features will be added soon, according to the company. During setup, the phone asked for permission to enable Glance for Mi, a wallpaper carousel service that I turned down because it shows sponsored content. There are quite a few pre-installed apps on the device, but I can uninstall most of them, which is a step in the right direction. I received promotional notifications from GetApps and Themes app while using my smartphone.

Redmi Note 10S performance and battery life

The Redmi Note 10S offers very good performance and shows no signs of slowdown during the review period. There is 6 GB of RAM for easy multitasking. I found the AMOLED display has good viewing angles and does get bright enough outdoors. The stereo speakers are a nifty addition and help improve the video viewing experience on Redmi Note 10S. The side fingerprint reader is easily accessible and allows you to quickly unlock your smartphone.

Considering the MediaTek Helio G95 processor, I expected this phone to perform better than the Redmi Note 10, and it performed well in several tests I was able to run. The Redmi Note 10S scored 330,650 points in AnTuTu, while Geekbench 5 scored 516 and 1,668 points in single-core and multi-core tests, respectively. Redmi Note 10S did not run GFXBench and 3DMark graphics benchmarks.

Call of Duty Mobile worked fine without any issues. The default is High for graphics and frame rates. At these settings, the game could be played without any performance drops, and I did not notice any stuttering while playing. After playing for 10 minutes, I noticed that the battery level dropped 3 percent and the top of the phone got a little warm to the touch.

The 5000mAh battery in the Redmi Note 10S offers good battery life. I could easily use my smartphone for over a day on a single charge. I did not notice a special discharge of the battery either. In our HD video test, the phone lasted 17 hours and 26 minutes, which is a good result. Xiaomi includes a 33W charger that gets the smartphone up to 40 percent in thirty minutes and 67 percent in an hour.

Redmi Note 10S cameras

techradar100

The Redmi Note 10S has a quad camera setup just like the Redmi Note 10, except that the main camera sensor has a higher resolution. It features a 64MP main camera, an 8MP ultra wide-angle camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. For selfies, it has a 13MP camera.

The Xiaomi camera app has many different shooting modes that are well thought out, making it easy to pick the one you want. Unfortunately, it still takes a few taps to enable macro mode. There is AI in the camera app and you can quickly switch it as well.

Daylight photos taken with the Redmi Note 10S were average and looked overly sharp. Nearby objects had decent detail, but distant objects appeared speckled. Photos captured at full 64 megapixel resolution had relatively low detail and were not as sharp as pixelated photos. You can take a wider shot with the ultra wide-angle camera, but the detail wasn’t as good and there was noticeable distortion on the sides.

The maximum video recording rate is 4K 30fps for the main camera. Footage captured at 1080p appeared to be stabilized and only occasionally flickered when walking, whereas 4K footage was not stabilized. Video captured in low light at 1080p was strictly average and had a flickering effect on the output, while 4K footage was not stabilized.

Verdict

IN Redmi Note 10 (Consideration) is still worth the money. Xiaomi has unveiled a new sibling with a more powerful processor, more RAM and a higher resolution main camera and has named it Redmi Note 10S. The only surprise is that this update was released just two months after the original was released.

However, the Note 10S is more expensive and the price difference is Rs. 2000 between Redmi Note 10 and Note 10S variants with the same RAM and storage. I didn’t find the camera a significant enough upgrade to recommend the Redmi Note 10S over the Redmi Note 10. However, for those looking for more performance, the Note 10S has a slight edge over its sibling.
